Led skull gas gauge

I had put the led skull gas gauge on my previous 05 Fatboy. I had to run the extra gray wire up to the speedo like the instructions said. As you would know, the center two leds quit working after a short time.
So now i have an 08 heritage, and would like to put the skull gas gauge on it. Do i have to have the gas gauge plugged in in order for the fuel range thing to work? I really could give a crap if the leds illuminated anymore anyways seems as how two are out. I would just like to have the gauge in place to match the skull gas cap. If i just leave the wiring unplugged will the low fuel and the mileage range still work?
Just figured i would ask here first before diggin into it and trying.
Also, if it needs to be plugged in do i have to run the gray wire like i did on my 05?
