07 Inner primary bearing
I have heard of this bearing going out on the 07s, and that they are the reason for the shrill ,whineing out of the primary.
What causes the inner prim. bearing to go out.

Here's one. Can't remember the miles but it was early somewhere between 600 and 1400. Replaced IPB and entire gearset. All is well now.

Sorry if I offended you, didn't mean to, It's just that I hear about bad bearings, bad camplates etc. but I have yet to see someone document them and include a pic, not saying it can't happen but I think it is on a very small scale percentage wise. And btw,, I live in the real world where even the best engineered mechanical devices sometimes fail. Like a buddy of mine said, if it has tires or t i t s, sooner or later you are going to have trouble with it.

The whining you hear is probably the auto chain tensioner, which is noisy at idle on my bike. Can't hear it much once underway. Same on my old '96 RK, on which I retrofitted this tensioner.

Bike at the dealer under warrentee, they are checking out the clutch, primary and transmission. They are being good to me.
So far they have told me the clutch is ok, the primary ok and thy think its a trans. bearing.
Keep you posted.

after riding hard two up and loaded down, hauling 500 lb of trailer and cargo and finally getting almost thru sturgis there was a loud whine noise from the primary, sounded like a gear drive, the bike was very hot. after it cooled the whine was gone, i keep listening for it now. no answers here

It was a broken main gear bearing casing that broke. Dealer replaced under warrentee.
Primary belt whine still there.
IDS installed, less vibrations.

My primary bearing went out at 5000 miles. If the noise goes away when you pull the clutch in in neutral, it's your primary bearing. Sometimes you have to blip the throttle to get the clutch plates free.
Dealer said they had a bad batch of bearings with improper heat treat. That could be smoke, though, I don't know.

So are you saying that it was part of the bearing that broke? The outer casing that contains the bearings? Not the transmission case? Sorry I'm being thick headed but I'm not clear on that statement.
