Is there any special tuning needed from an ECM perspective? I have Rinehart slip ons, with no tuning. Seems to run fine.

Easier to tell you what's the same.
Nothing.

If you have performance exhaust on your bike, you should also have a high flow air cleaner installed (like the poor mans SE A/C described in this thread) and your ECM needs to have a new map that will allow for the higher flowing exhaust and air cleaner. This new map could come from a Stage-1 download from your dealer, a SERT, a PowerCommander etc etc... Check out the EFI section for more info. With the new map, your bike will run ALOT better. Enjoy...

If the "spacer" you refer to is the dense foam ring which self-sticks to the top of the air cleaner filter element just underneath the outside metal cover, this particular ring is used to space the metal cover away from the air cleaner element when using a "real" K & N filter element to order to create some clearance for the cover and prevent it from cracking the metal filter top at the central mounting screw point in the air filter element. It WILL increase the amount the A/C cover sticks out from the side of the engine.
Check out the different center mounting screw clearance between the paper Harley-Davidson filter element and a "real" K & N filter element (K & N PN HD-0800) and you will quickly agree.

What about an '05 Sporty ???
Not installed on the bike yet, but trying to decide,
if it is still a good idea...??
I had this idea, before I saw this thread and when I read this thread,
I thought; this really is a good idea...., but I may have gone too far.
I got a "new" used backing plate, from ebay. Going to get a K&N.
Took a dremel and basically cut the "snorkel-thing" off the bottom.
I cut the entire bottom off...,
the bottom of backing plate is now right in line with the bottom of the stock filter. The entire bottom 1/4 of the backing plate doesn't exsist any more.
I'm wondering if I went too far ? If I dorked this up, I may just part with the bucks and get a Ness. Whatda ya think ????

Why did you do that? What did you think you'd gain? Part of the part you hacked off is what holds the backing plate to the bike. You've basically screwed it... I wouldn't scrap the entire thing over the backing plate though. Just buy a new backing plate (only $8 for standard and about $30 for chrome or wrinkle black) and install it. You'll be fine.

I just took off the bottom and 1/4 of the back.
It will still mount fine, still hold the air filter element.
What I was thinking is that the airflow is dorked up, because of the air can completely flow across the bottom of the filter and have a siphon effect on air trying to get in to the element.
I (at that exact moment in time, with a dremel in my hand) thought that the small snorkel opening would just not flow enough air. This is an '05 Sportster, with a small stupid snorkel on the bottom of the ham can...
btw, everything for the 04, 05 and 06 is way more expensive, than every other year (never mind back in the day...), I would be happy if I can get a new backing plate for under $10.00, but would be suprised, also.
THANKS, I am going to order the rest of the parts soon, and would rather build a part, than buy it (although it has been a few years since I wrenched), but if the shrink-wrapped Ness part is just going to do a better job...

this thread is about building your own SE A/C, if you have a question about some other filter. Start your own thread...

Is installation of this pretty much a no-brainer??? I installed a Big Sucker when I had my Sporty. Is it going to be pretty much the same procdure?? The only thing I am wondering about is the breather plugs.

Yes it is simple. Read the instructions that are attached in post #4 of this thread. It is very very simple. With some torques, allen, standard and metric (for the breather bolts, 11mm IIRC) sockets, Blue loctite and a in/lbs torque wrench you can get the job done in less then a half hour.
Don't worry about it. Just take your time and don't skip any steps in the instructions and you should be fine. Helps to read them over a couple times before starting to make sure you understand everything. Good Luck...

I think it's just for '99 and later Softails.

Nope... As I stated in the first post, according to HD's web site it will fit '01-later EFI Softails, (except '05 FLSTFI 15th Anniversary), '02-later EFI Touring and '04-later EFI Dyna models. Does not fit '06 FLHTCUSE models with stock A/C cover.
