95" starter

the first time i hit the starter after i had it inched out, i could feel the difference of the added compression. occasionally the starter would make this ugly teeth skipping noise. sounded as if there was a lack of jam to turn it over. i was thinking that perhaps i needed a higher output battery and heavy duty cables. well it packed it in without warning today. fortunately, i managed to get it going to get it home. i am hoping it is just the solinoid, but if it is the starter clutch, what would you recommend this time around?

don't use a spike, mine gives me fits. the all balls stuff is of good quality, check there. a heavy duty clutch would prbably work in the stock starter.

Compression releases would be the key.........do you have them installed?

Spyke is a brand of starter. Some have had bad luck with them.

You can put a Terry Components clutch in your starter, I put one in mine and haven't looked back yet. I'm running a 103 with 10.65:1 CR.

Now, one of the best upgrades you can do to your primary is to change out the fine teeth starter ring gear and pinion gear. I have the 10/84 starter ring gear and pinion gear from Compufire. This also gives about 15% more torque for starting.

geezer, i looked up terry components clutch and it says that the 1.6 cannot be used on an flht model. did you use an oil filter spacer? i don't believe that compression releases were installed steve, but at this point how big a deal would it be? at what tear apart stage could they be dealt with?

I change mine to just a drag specalties house brand 1.4kw starter and that made a big defference. Do go through all your wires and apply some dielectric grease and check frame grounds.I had a cranking pressure of 200 on a 95" motor. This was on a 05 e-glide. Any lager starter staes to add cost because of up gradeing of wireing. There are also some starter relays that block other electrical draws durning starting.

I would go with the big boar battery and up grade your wires. The stock wires suck. My 03 RK left me on the side of the road because my wires were tight but the ground wasn't making contact through the black powder coat. After going through and cleaning, scraping and diegrinding every contact point. Now it cranks easily almost like it doesn't have spark plugs in it
