20k service.. what's included?

Looking for a breakdown of what the dealer is supposed to do on my 20k for an 05 DWG. I'm taking it to a new dealer and I don't trust any of them to give me what they say.

Ha ha ha. Good luck. You can get the entire list by purchasing a shop manual from the dealer or just ask here at the VTF and someone might have it handy to post up (I know, you just did that). If you are leaning toward the shop manual, consider getting the parts manual too.

Ya still won't know if they did all of the work but at least then you'll be in good shape to learn and be sure it's done right because you did it yourself.

Either that or find someone you trust who knows their sheit. But I have found that just going in to a dealer (I've used four so far), well it's a bit of a crap shoot. Only solace is that a lot of the stuff on the list is not all that important to a lot of folks.

So, you take it in. You pays your money and you takes your chances. No biggie, lot's of us do that. Them Harleys are expensive.

Buy the service manual, it's like 40 or 50 bucks. Then do all the work yourself. That way you:
1) Know everything was done.
2) Learn all about your bike.
3) Get the satisfaction of a job done.

From the Owner's Manual

change oil and filter
inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks
inspect and service air cleaner
check tire pressure and tread
if spoked wheels, check spoke tightness
replace primary lubricant
replace transmission lubricant
check clutch adjustment
check primary chain adjustment
inspect rear belt and sprockets and adjust belt
throttle, brake, clutch and enrichener controls - check, adjust and lubricate
inspect and lubricate jiffy stand
inspect fuel lines, valves, and fittings
check level and condition of brake fluid
inspect brake pads
replace spark plugs
check operation of electrical switches and equipment
check engine idle speed
replace front fork oil
adjust and lubricate steering head bearings
check tightness of critical fasteners
inspect engine mounts and stabilizer links

With the service manual and a few special tools, you can do the majority of these items. Most of the check/inspection items you should do yourself

Most of the service you could probably do yourself there is a learning curve. Some of these guys think you are born with the ability to do all the work. I believe in 05 the front forks are supposed to be inspected every 20,000 miles and the fluid replaced. in 2006 they changed that to 50,000. That's the case for FLHT any way. Tearing down the front forks may not be for everybody.. I do my own service but would pay to have the forks done on my ultra..

My service manual states that the front fork oil doesn't need to be replaced until 50,000 miles, so I wouldn't think that the dealers are doing it any sooner than that at a regular service interval.

My 2006 FLHTCUI the front fork oil and inspection was done at 50,000 miles as stated in the manual but my 2003 FLHTCUI was done every 20,000 miles as stated in the manual for that year. So, somewhere between 2003 and 2006 HD decided that every 50,000 would be OK for the front forks. On my 2006 which I just had done in August it is more than just changing the fork oil, they actually tear down the entire front end and inspect the parts (I was at the dealer ALL day and watched them perform the service and tear down the front end). They actually did it!

Wow, you had better stick with that dealer! Where is your dealer located? I'll make the trip if it isn't too far?

Thanks for the info guys. I think I can handle everything except the forks.. Owners manual says they get work at 20k... I've had dirtbike forks apart once before, learned my lesson.

Also, is there a service bulliten I can print out about the neck bearing clunk issue? I never worried about complaining but since it's going in I thought I'd ask them about solving it.
