Pinion Runout?

OK, next week I plan to pull off the cam cover and have a look at the cam chain tensioners at 42,000 miles. I would like to go gear drive cams if pinion runout allows. What is the maximum acceptable runout to allow the change to gear drive cams? Thanks

I put S&S 510's in my bike and it had.0015 run out, sounded like a "THRESHING MACHINE" when it warmed up !....yanked 'em out and went to the new style cam plate with 37n Andrews cams,LOVE THE DIFFERENCE !.......am told by those who allegedly know that .003 run-out is allowable......in my case it was TOO DAMN NOISY at half that much ....I've also put the gear drive cams in bikes with .002 and they were quiet...go figure !.

some times you get a bad gear or you need to go oversize or undersize. I have or at least had .0015 when I did mine 25,000 miles ago (61,000 total) and they have remained quiet and you can not tell it is gear drive by hearing it run. My gear lash was spot on too.

You can also call Andrews and discuss with them. They will give you some good guidance on what to look for and the tolerances required. Can also give you an idea of what cam you should go with based on how you want to ride.
