I'm sorry, but I would'nt put a Fram Fliter on my car much less my Harley. It's what goes in your filter and doesn't come out that counts. The newer oil filters are much more efficient (smaller particles) at filtering your oil then the older ones. The Fram Oil Filters are not very efficient filters. They let more small particles of metal and dirt continue going right on thru the filter and back into the engine causing damage. This damage might not show up today, but give it time. Spend the extra few bucks and buy a high efficient oil filter. Proform, HD and Amsoil, either one of these brands are what I would trust to put on my Harley. A Fram, no way. My 2 cents.

Thanks,
Tony

Great idea, I will tell my dealer, three services, three times oil all over the front of the engine and frame. I have know being given a free valet, when the bike is next serviced.

I agree about the filters, it is not worth saving a few cents by buying cheaper filters. A few years back there was a problem with cheap filters, and the glue used in them. A couple of bikes, siezed there engines due to this, it blocked the oil ways. I will always use the proper dealer ones, piece of mind.

The empty bottle was my next plan, I thought I was the first with that one.

the box is a great idea. i have used the aluminum foil and it works as well. as for the filters i agree for sure. i have been using a k&n oil filter on my 02 rk. i really like the idea on not needing a filter wrench. the filter has a 17mm nut made on the end of it. no problems with the sensor at all. also no filter wrench to get in the way when getting the filter out. k&n rocks imo.

Chappy, do you or anyone else have a good web site that I could order K & N oil filters, specifically K&N 171C?

you can check out your local aftermarket shops or you can go to http://knpowersports.com/buy/knusa.htm and search for a dealer in your area. they have them online but shipping will kill you. i have a local shop that get them for me and the cost me $14 which is as cheap as the harley filters. good luck let me know if i can help in any other way.

Oil change mess Prevention

The box trick works well.....I found one other way also. It might not be better but it is different....

First I always change oil after the bike has been at normal operating temp. (Thats a whole other thread) Anyway I dump the oil tank first.

Then I loosen the filter enough that it turns easy but the gasket is still not leaking.

Next I then take a plastic bag. (The kind you get from walmart or food stores with the handles on them) Anyway I take this bag, flaten it out and slide it under and around the filter. One handle on each side.

Now pulling it tight against the filter assembly tie the handles together, right over the exhaust pipe or frame, on the other side of the bike.

Now form a trough to your drain pan, using the bag.

Now spin the filter off. The oil goes onto the bag and into the pan.

Reach in and wipe off the filter assembly.

Cut the tied bag handles and carefully starting from the filter assmbly end roll and pull the plastic bag to your drain pan.

Sounds like a lot of crap to do but it takes about the same time as folding the box and it works great on 88B counter balanced motors.....Later....Butch

That is a nice tip. I'm a FNG and I was wondering how I was going to change that filter without using a can of degreaser afterwards...

You're kidding, right? They gave you back the bike with oil all over the front of it?? Three times?? Find another dealer. If they can't get the minor details right, then I wouldn't trust them getting the important details right. Makes me shiver...

Bob,
Mucho gracias for the pics. I would like to see similiar pics for all three cavities on the Road King. I'm new at this and have questions. For example, my filter has notches, where do I get a filter wrench to fit?
