Dammnn, and I was really enjoying punching a hole in the end of the filter and watching it drain all over the frame and then getting soaked up by the braided clutch cable cover and continuing to leak from there for a few more days.

Thanks for the great tip.

Now there's a good tip. I've seen all the milk jug and plastic pieces cut to shoot oil out left side of bike tricks. This one is so damn simple. Way to simple for me to have figured out.

Thanks Hab! Makes me wanty to go out and change the oil right now wheather it needs it or not. Think back on all the cussing because of the mess the old oil left. I'm starting to smile again.

It's a lot harder to do on a softail though because of the balancers in the way! Anyone have a tip for that one?

Good tip - tried it on my 03 fatty and I got so darn excited that I didnt make a mess that I accidently slipped and shot the filter straight into the floorboard which in turn deflected it into the engine and made more of a mess then if I just let it drain naturally all over everything. Maybe next time I will have better luck.

LOL

next time, hook one end of a bungee cord to the filter and the other end to any nearby, solid object... that will get it out of your way much faster so you won't drop it

I use about a 1 foot piece of tin foil and put it behind the oil filter much like the H Kid shows in his pictures. It gives a bit more coverage than the filter box does.

I tried the punching a hole in the end of the filter trick, but the oil did not all drain out the hole.

What do you want to bit the price of filters goes up because of the re-usable box. Some of the best ideas in life are simple and free!

Oil change

This is something I have done before. It is good advice. One thing though. I dont know about you, but I have to remove my oil sending unit in front of the oil filter so that it is easy to remove the filter. It is in the way. I have a 2003 fxdl. Anyway, it is good advice. Thanks Hab. Wayne

Good tip, also another way is to get an empty bleach or windshield washer gallon jug and cut the bottom off as well as half the side, leave the handle in the up position and keep the cap. Trim to fit under the filter, Loosen the filter and completely remove vs. letting it sit and drain, the plastic jug when under the filter will capture all the oil and you can slide the filter down toward the handle and remove immediately, I put a few paper towels down to catch the out flow from the filter mount.

Check the third pic. There is a square 'hole' dut into the filter wrench. Just make sure you leave the edge intact. I've never taken the plug out after cutting the hole.
