How to tell?
Okay, is there a way to tell what the heck a shop has done to a bike on their build? Or do you have to tear it apart to tell....?
I bought a 2005 Ultra a few months ago from my wife's co-worker.
This guy was anal about his bike, still looks brand new, even with 11K on the odometer. It has a 103", non-SE, done in a shop in Arizona. He didn't have the particulars because he's moved several times and doesn't have the receipts, and apparently isn't mechanical enough to remember them.
My bad, but is there any way to tell what has been done?
Thanks,

Arizona? Could be GMR performance, call Steve and ask if he did the work. Click on the GMR advertisement over to the right of this page for the phone number.

Basically you will have to have the motor apart to see what was done. The cams usually have the model numbers on them, the pistons will have part numbers or some kind of marking on them. Heads are hard to tell, not sure if anyone puts their marking on them after porting/polishing them.
Too bad the guy didn't remember or write stuff down......would make it much easier for you.

why not ask him where he had the work done? maybe the shop that did the work will have it documented in their files or on the computer.

I guess I'll have to wait for him to return from Europe and ask. He left the week after I bought the bike (which is why I got a good deal on it) and won't be back until late Spring.
Thanks!

Just a thought, but what about taking it to a shop w/ a Dyno & have them do a couple of runs. At very least that would tell you if it was performing like a 103 or an 88. And at about $50 (at least around here), it would be a heck of a lot cheaper that having a shop tear into the motor to see what was done.

It'd be nice to know what's in there, but why not get it dynoed?
You'd know the end result of all the work and if ya want a higher or lower power band you can then decide on new parts.

Does it say "Screamin' Eagle" on the intake side of the heads? If it is all SE parts, you could remove a spark plug and look inside the cylinder at a piston. Then look in the SE catalog and try to match the shape with one in the catalog. You should be able to determine a lot from what you see. If they are flat tops or hi-comp pistons, it would help determine what heads you have (assuming stock heads). Cams would pretty much require going in and looking to see what they are.
