Something from nothing?

Hi All, I have a question for the guru's of the 88b's. I have never wrenched on anything newer than a 86wide glide and want to get to know the 88B intamatly. I am thinking of buying parts and building a motor using a set of S&S cases. Is this one way to learn the engin's quirks or is there an easier way. I plan on building my wife a bike and will use the 88B for that.
What do you guys think?
Nick
