Angry Trouble, HELP! 2005 FLSTNI fuel trouble.

Heya,
I have been riding my whole life but I bought my first Harley last August, an 05 FLSTNI Softail Deluxe. I have since changed the seat and tins, and it is now a custom Fatboy. Anyway, in regards to the tins. I installed my new Fatboy tank last night and realized I bit off more than I could chew. The damn fule system is in the tank and I don't think it is right. The bike runs and everything, but the damn fuel guage says it is full (there is about a gallon in it), and the low fuel light is on. What have I done wrong? The plate sits flush on the tank. I pathed the fuel float to the left of the passthrough that is for the guage wiring, is that wrong?
Thanks!
