Pinging and lugging?

Hello,

I'm trying to make sense of pinging and what is considered lugging. I'm running a high compression (10.4:1) 95" motor with Mackie TC590G cams that puts out 200 PSI CCP. It will ping on hot days during light acceleration from 2300 RPM in 5th gear. I'm wondering if that's considered lugging and the pinging is 'normal' or if there is a timing/CCP issue.

Thanks in advance,

I'm by no means an expert on hi-po engines but I'd say 2300 rpm's in 5th gear is lugging it with the compression you have.

If your not already, try to use high octane fuel as much as possible.

I don't have a tach on my 05 WG, but all V-Twin engines like to be up in a "happy" rev zone, keeps the oil pressure up to the heads, etc. Just ride by the "seat of the pants" feel, where the engine sounds happy.

I can tell you that I always have 2 nd. gear at over 20 mph, 3 rd. gear over 30 mph, 4 th. gear over 40 mph, and 5 th. gear over 50 mph. Below that and my bike starts to buzz & feel sloppy.
