Piston condition

Is this normal carbon build up? Blow by? Rich? I am more experienced with sleds, pistons are fairly clean in them. Atleast the ones I've seen.

With only 2500 miles on them, mine didn't look much different than that when I opened her up. I was surprised, too. How do your cylinder walls look?

Yep, thats normal. Some say the oil fog from the breather in the air cleaner does that, some say running too fat does it too.

I didn't look at cylinder walls yet. Will next time I am out there.

I do get some oil in the air cleaner. Just as long as no one say OMG your lucky it ran so long.

I figured it was normal, but its free to ask. Never know.

...Come to think of it, if you zoom in REAL close, it looks like theres some spalling and cracking on the surface of the piston

Good thing my 98" kit is on under, and this all for amusement purposes only.

One way to get rid of excess carbon build up is to mist water from a spray bottle into the open throat of the carb/throttle body. The water vapor "shocks" the carbon off the piston. Oh yea, do this OUTSIDE! It makes a mess!

Do you find it necessary to replace the spark plugs after this procedure?

Thats exactly what my pistons looked like when I tore my engine down a few weeks ago. 5800 miles.

Took mine apart at 21K to install the 98" kit. Looked very similar. Spoke to Steve at GMR about it and he said it's normal.
