White smoke out of the air cleaner question...
Yesterday, I let off the starter about a half second too early, I guess, and a pretty amazing amount of white smoke came out of the a/c. Hit the starter again and it fired right up.
Were the valves at just the wrong spot when I let off the starter, and the smoke was just rolling out of a cylinder through the intake valve, or is there something I need to check here? It was a hot start.
Thanks!
BTW, it's an '05 Ultra, EFI and SE a/c.

Sounds like a backfire through the intake. Was it smoke or atomized fuel?
Either way it is minor, unless of course it starts doing it all the time.
If I had to guess, it just went through its intake stroke on one cylinder and fired on the other cylinder. When you let off the starter at just the right time, the piston on the compression stroke just fired and probably didn't have enough rotational power to get it past TDC. This would cause the engine to have a reverse rotation, pushing all the fuel back out through the intake. Hense the name "Backfire".

Had exact thing happen on my Softail a few weeks ago. Hot start, let off starter too early, white smoke through AC. Hasn't happened since. I'd like to know myself.

I have had this happen, too....
...and figured other than burning off a little gas, there was not a real problem. Smoke was whitish, not black or blue...and the scooter fired right up on the next go-round. Springer's guess sure makes sense.

Has happend to me from time to time, 05 FLHTCI, most of the time is when I don't stay on the starter button long enough. Just shake my head, say smothing nasty and then hit the button again.

If it had been a kick start you would be sure to "follow thru" or pay for it in the knee...same basic thing applies to the button, learn how to push it, start the ENGINE.
