What arwe good bolt-on performance enhancements

I've been searching this site for good recommendations on performance enhancements that I can do myself and am not sure if I've found everything. I have a 2001 FXD carburated. I want to do as much as I can by myself with my own tools and I'm not too bad working on my own stuff in my garage. Here's what I have found so far that I can do myself:
1. New exhaust
2. New air cleaner
3. rejet carbs

I could use all of your expertise on what else can/should be done such as cams, cam gears, heads, better gasoline, synthetic oils, etc.
Again, Just loking for all possible do-it-yourself ideas. I don't want to take it to a shop for anything other than a dyno. I have a policy that I will not pay someone else to do work that I can do myself.
Thanks.

If you're going to Stage II and beyond (big bore, cams, heads,...) the best advice I can give you is to look for complete packages, that is, set ups where the components have been matched.

There are a million combinations and many a rider has been sorely disappointed by not doing his due diligence first.

The good news is the VTF is loaded with good information and terrific members who are willing to share their experience.

regards,

wyo

Get the shop manual for your bike if you dont have one. Look at the steps involving head removal and re-install and the same for camshafts. if you feel comfortable with the procedures, you can do it all by yourself except probably cylinder head porting and decking and cylinder boring. Many sources for that kind of work. Then as mentioned above, put together a proven matched package and you cant go wrong.
