Engine black

Is there a product that can be used to restore the black on engine fins?

S100 makes a product called Engine brightner. The can says "brings back that factory black look. I bought a can but have not tried it yet. I have heard that it works. If you try it let me know what you think.

Agree. S100 is good. I use a few QTips to get it into the recesses of the fins. Helps to soak up any overspray.

Lightbulb silicone

Usually sprays the engine and covers on my FXDX with silicone. Cleans the parts up and makes them shine. Any other good ideas.

Where can I get the S100 ?

What can you use if the black is worn off in a spot?

I've used flat black paint applied with the end of a toothpick (or chopstick) depending on the size of the spot.

I would only recommend using a chopstick on *** bikes.

Does paint hold up to the heat of the engine? The spot is on one of my head fins. The black is not totaly worn off, looks like someone wiped the fin and it made a whitish looking line.

I guess I will try some high temp flat black. Just wanted to make sure it would not have an adverse reaction to the factory black.

Is it powered coated at the factory?

Harley has a black engine paint in touch up bottles and spray can. It looks good but does not last long. Even though it is intended for engines, it is regular acrylic lacquer. You can plan on repainting some at the end of each riding season. High temp black does NOT match the Harley paint.

I've repainted the black cases on my 1995 Sportster three or four times. It's not all that hard if you mask carefully. Simply paint over the fins and remove the paint with sandpaper or a scuffing sponge.

Yes, the original paint is powdercoat.
