Jumpy throttle

It's a 2001 RK Standard which I bought used. The throttle control is so sensitive that when I hit a bump, I inadvertently jerk the throttle. I have tried putting the throttle friction lock on just a little, but it seems to tighten up as I am riding. Anyone else have this problem? What did you do to fix it?

Is it the stock CV carb or another brand, ie, Mikuni??

Adjusting the pull cable to give the throttle grip a little slack should help.

It's the stock carb. Thanks for the tip Ed Y, I'll check the manual and give the pull cable idea a try.

Thought about it a little, and believe that I wouldn't get the slack needed to make the throttle a little less sensitive by adjusting the pull cable adjuster. The condition occurs when I have tension on the throttle and hit a bump. I would guess that no matter how much slack I adjusted into the throttle cable adjuster, I would still be in the same situation because the cable is holding the throttle open and the slack is already out of it.

Problem might be caused because you are gripping too hard and not relaxing on the throttle. CV carb is not that finicky. Mikuni's can be for some people.

Don't know what else to tell you.

Is it possible that the stock carb was modified with a Thunderslide or similar kit? Modification could cause the carb to be more sensitive than you might be used to.

Only mod is a dynojet kit with the SE breather kit and SE slip-ons. Maybe I am just gripping the throttle to hard. It just seems so sensitive compared to other HDs I have owned. Granted the others were old bikes (49 WL, 79 Sporty, 84 FXSB). This is the first touring bike, and by far the newest. My arms are also more extended than with the other bikes so when I hit a bump, I don't have any give in the elbows. The bike runs great and is a joy to ride. Maybe a few thousand more miles will do it.

You may have hit the nail on the head with the arms extended thing. Know a lot of guys that have changed bars on the RK to a bar with more pullback. I've heard of short armed guys with apehangers having that problem for that exact same reason. Maybe try to find someone who has put bars with more pullback on and see if you could try it out.

Good idea. I also just realized that the grips have been changed to the HD large horizontal chrome and rubber kind. They feel comfortable, but they are different than I am used to. The bike also has Heritage bars installed. The proplem is certainly not a big deal, and is something I will learn to get used to. Just curious about it. Thanks all for the help.
