Oil temp dipstick
I want to replace the dipstick with a temperature reading type. I've only seen the digital readout model available for my 2000 RK. Is there another source? I prefer the analog style with the white face. Has anyone taken one of these and simply bent the probe to fit?

You can get the analog one from any Harley Dealer, just have them order it if it is not in stock.

Analog vs Digital
Hey Guys,
FYI...
Bought an analog oil temp dipstick from H-D and tested the temp against a fluke pyrometer it was nearly 20 degrees off @ 200 degrees. It was an easy fix since you can diassemble them and set the high point of temp. to the meter. It looks like a meat thermometer when it is all disassembled

Ive had 5, yes 5 of these dip sticks. Mine have stopped working within 6 months. Replaced the battery in one and now my bike reads a cool 356 all the time. Also I have done Stage III to my Roadglide and when I have the need to go fast I have blown the dip stick right out of the motor. Then you blow oil all over the bike especially the back rotor which causes obvious problems. So, just my experience $500 on this product whos the dip stick. Went back to the stock one.

I used to always run .....
a Stewart-Warner Minipanel (see the SW website, miscellaneous guages page). The temp sensor replaces the plug in the middle of the oil pan(on an RK), the pressure sensor goes into an adaptor on the spot the oil light switch goes, the voltmeter and lights connct to ignition hot. Its a little panel, about 5 inches wide and maybe 2 inches high, with three little guages, about the size of 50cent pieces. Easy to mount just about anywhere up front, and lighted at night too. Lets you spot trouble coming, like a low charge rate or dropping pressure, before it bites ya. I've got the HD cylinder-head mounted pressure guage, now, but that's just and ornament, not really useful.

I have a new digital. If my bike didn't have so many miles I would sh$t at the high tempuratures. I do use syntheticsn and it dousn't burn my leg, but 275 running 85 mph, two up, loaded, across the dessert in 90 + degree weather. Seems to run 225-235 around town (summer LA heat, i.e. not real hot). Think I'll sell it (LOL).

I've got the cheap analog meat thermometer on my Deuce 250 degrees plus out here in the West Texas Desert and that's with synthetic I've heard the oil temp in the motor is hotter than the oil in the tank, BTW at what temp does synthetic lube "break down" ?

Depending on basestocks, additives, etc. I've read that synthetics don't start breaking down until 300 degrees F.

Wyo, what temps do you get on the road. I checked mine again several times last week end. Riding fairly hard in warm weather seems to get 275 or so, although it seems to increase 5-10 degrees during the few minutes after i turn the engine off (heat sink, i guess?). I have had the electronic override kick in a couple times(i.e. starting adjusting the firing, etal) in heavy traffic (once at Laughlin where it was pretty hot as well as traffic), which means it was over 300, assuming it works as advertised. Thank god for synthetic oil.
I just ordered the factory oil cooler, may even try to install it myself (maybe).
