HELP: 2005 Road King Engine Starting Problem

So, for about a week I needed to twist the throttle a quarter inch to get the engine started otherwise, I would just hear the starter going.
Now, I have to crank the throttle all the way full in order to get it going.
* I just changed the spark plugs a month ago.
* the battery voltage is okay (I checked it)
* once started, & if you get off the bike & stand 2 feet away from the back end of the bike, you can smell gas around the end of exhaust area
Any comments are appreciated.
Greg

dynarule is an unknown quantity at this point
Is it carbed or injected? Sounds carbed to me. Maybe a sticking float or a bad needle valve.

Have you ever replaced the Throttle Position Sensor? Are you getting a check engine light? Check the DTC codes and they should give you the trouble area. My guess is the TPS. That will be $100 for IDS (Internet Diagnostic Service)...

Well, I haven't replaced the throttle position sensor since I got the RK in 2005 (30,000 miles I put on it). Also, I'm not getting a check engine light, & I checked the DTC codes & nothing came up showing anything wrong so, maybe it's a diagnostic thing like you said. I was hoping I could fix it myself. I don't have a laptop or dyno equipment. Thanks for you help bbrowncods. Sounds like you have a cool Road King with all the stuff you have on it.

Sounds like it could be a IAC issue. There are threads that tell about cleaning the IAC.

If you roll the throttle wide open on that bike it should not start at all. When cranking at wide open throttle the PCM will not deliver any fuel at all. If you crank the throttle wide open and it starts and runs rich I would suspect a leaking injector since the ECM isnt firing it.
If you only had to crack the throttle I would suspect (as stated above) the IAC.
GoodLuck
