2000 FLH fatal sounding noise

Hi guys, haven't been here in a very long time. Hope everyone is well!

I've only worked on shovels and Evos, but a friend of mine has an injected 2000 FLH with a really bad engine noise. It is a very deep banging noise from the bottom which is worse at idle. Idle is very rough, which is not characteristic of the 2000 injected engine. Noise tends to diminish as rpm increase, and it runs better as rpm increase.

Cam chain and shoe look fine, I was leaning towards the valve train because of the crappy idle, but the noise sounds worse than that.

Doesn't sound like piston slap or rods. Is it common for this year of twin cam to have a bottom end problem? I had one as a police bike and it saw some really rough service for a few years, but never had a mechanical problem.

Is the compensator tight. If loose will cause some awful noises and vibrations.

Holy crap, I didn't even think of that... Always an issue with evos, I didn,t realize TC's had the same prob.
