2005 TC88 Heads
Am I right that the TC88 heads were changed for the 2005 model year? If so, are the 2006 heads the same as the 2005 heads? Someone told me that ONLY 2005 was the odd year and that the 2006 heads were back to the old ones. As you can see, I'm very confused, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, the '05 heads are a little different from the '99-'04....they are the same casting with different valve train. The '06 and up heads have the '05 style valve train with a different casting...the ports were re-shaped for the '06 and up heads, they did not go back to the "old ones".
Here's a link showing the difference in the '05 compared to the earlier heads;

Thanks. Now I've got to decide between an '02 with the better bottom end (Timken/crank) or an '06 with the better heads.

You can install the 06 heads on the 02 and have the best of both worlds.

Don't the 08 and up heads have the front motor mount holes drilled in them?

Yes, but they will still fit on the older engines.

I know, but I think they would look kind of stupid.

Oh, I assumed there would be a machined pad that would stick out like a sore thumb.

There is, only on the front head. You can see it, but it somewhat hidden by the motorcycle frame etc.

A couple of minutes of masking tape and about 3 seconds of wrinkle black spray paint will take care of that.

Since you would normally port the heads on most builds, the point is moot. Get to 02 and don't look back.
The 06 heads are marginally better, but when ported, it doesn't matter.
