2004 classic not charging

Here's the deal. When i got the bike out last month the battery was shot. Still had the first one in it. I installed a new battery and started right up. The first day the voltage gauge said 12 volts. It looked like it was not charging. The next day it went up to 14. until yesterday. The bike started hard and i notice when i was driveing none of the gauges (speed and tach ok) worked and the radio was turning off and on. I stopped and shut down the bike restarted and it seemed ok. The only thing i notice was the voltage was down to 12 again and the engine and security lights where on. I checked the codes and it said there was an over voltage. I reset the codes because they may have come from when i used the battery charger to start. (used booth- i know thats not good i notice the light before but there was no problems). I took it for a 20 miles ride and the codes did not come back but the voltage is still showing 12. I checked all the fuses and they are ok. The voltage on the battery when running is 12.8 voltage. Any ideas. Thanks for the help. Tim

Dunno much about the charging system, but sounds like a voltage regulator to me. Something similar happened to my lowrider a couple of years back. Took it to the shop, and after they replaced it never had a problem again.

Might not be whats going on with yours, but it does sound similar

Hello Thanks to all the people who post on this group. I found out how to check my Stator. I got no conection from the stator leads to ground and only .003 from lead to lead on the stator. The staotr was putting out 20VAC @2000RPM's and around 48VAC @ 3500. I purchase a used Regulator off ebay and hooked it up last. I now have 14.3 volts at teh battrey and all looks good. Thanks to all the people who repleyed to my post and all the other i read to track it down. The forum saved ne around 300.00 dollars Thanks Tim

Went through the same exact thing with my 04 EGC awhile back. Bad stator, and of course a new battery.
