Hard Starting
2003 Heritage Softail. When starting the bike after it's been riden, The engine cranks slow, almost stops, then proceeds to turn over faster and starts. Bike never will not start, but I'm concerned that there may be something wrong with the starter. Bike only has 15,000 miles on it.
Any info on this issue, much appreciated.

Put a voltmeter on the battery and see what the # goes down to when cranking.
But you say it only happens when hot? Stock compression?

Engine is Stock. I'm kind of leaning towards my clutch plates now that I'm thinking about it. Brand new battery.

If the bike is neutral what effect would the clutch have on it?
I'd still look at the battery voltage during starting. Its free to do. Some dip is normal, 11 ish I think.
Check connections to starter, starter relay ect. Hard to say without hearing it.

I'd be more inclined to say there is a problem with the brushes in the starter from the symptoms you are talking about.

I am not saying thats it. Just step to do that doesn't cost nothing.
When my starter clutch went, I think it didn't do anything. But I suppose that could be intermitent???

Last time that happened to me..it was a loose connection on the negative side of the battery terminal. It was snug...not tight! Tightened it and presto...no problems!
