transmision grind

04 Heritage with 20,000 miles. This must be something new because I'm sure I would remember if it's always done this.
First shift from neutral to 1st when bike is started after sitting overnite or for more than two hours, I get a pretty bad gear grind. Doesn't matter if engine is started with clutch in or out or if you let it warm up for 10min it will grind. Only way I can find to avoid it is to start with trans in 1st gear. Trans fluid level is fine, clutch seems to be properly adjusted, what else should I look for?

That is normal for a Harley. After starting pull in the clutch and rev a little and then put in first gear. This will reduce grinding of gears. Or take the time to warm up the bike.

Probably time for a complete clutch adjustment, to include the clutch basket. It's in the manual. If you don't have one, there have been many post here about it. Try the search function, if no go, post back and I'll post the proceedure.

Put some good synthetic oil in there, throw that SE crap away... Mine did that when I first got it, hasn't done it since I switched to amsoil..
