There is a solid pink stuff that they feel can block the liquid lube from getting into all the bearings.

It is thick ****, and not impossible. I have a problem with my 07, when I rip it open, it will be interesting to see. I have have ran redline for about 36k miles. It has been parked for a couple years, but I been planning on getting to it.

Be interested to see how this thread turns out, I've been using Shockproof heavy for years in both 5 and 6 speeds. My 2010 trike has 21,000 miles with it and my dads 09 trike has well over 35,000 miles with it and no problems. I think the bearings just plain took a sh!t

Belray all the way. I have ran it for years. It will make your reanny shift smoother and not Clunk like everyone else running inferior snake oil kinds of products. Never run 20w50 though. That's just asking for probs.
Stick with Belray and you won't have trans issues.

I have 2 questions concerning this topic.
1. My son owns a 07 VROD Muscle. That bike only has one hole to fill for everything. I do all the maintenance on his bike. What would you guys recommend in this situation? (Currently using amsoil 20/50 syn)
2. Should we be monitoring gear oil temps? If so, how can this be done and what temp would cause concern?

I was following a discussion a different Harley forum, about all the bad tranny bearings. There does seem to be an issue. I may go with aftermarket. Was looking baker or one of them makes a kit, bearins and plate, its not cheap.
I am not a huge believer in different oils being such a big deal. I went to Redline so I could identify leaks easy.

People have been using Redline on this forum, since the early days. Granted most of those guys are gone. Also granted we have read about all kinds of other great stuff, to only hear about the next great thing, later.

I had my balls out on my 01 around 57k, they looked ok. Put syn 3 in around 7k, Redline in at 45k. Bike has 68k now. I realize this is just one guys experience.
If I had a tranny fail, and dealer said it was due to lube, I'd probably change too. I do my own work so, then I can only 2nd guess myself.

I mentioned in another thread about my '79 Superglide I rode for 167,000 miles. Straight weight 50 in the motor and transmission and zero problems. Maybe they built them tougher back then. Seems like a whole lot of overkill.

I run Redline 75w250 full synthetic shockproof in my Baker DD6 and ride in temps as low as 40 degrees. My DD6 has 18,000 + on it and the gears are flawless. Limited wear on the dog teeth and not a single bearing failure. At Baker we have recommended this same oil to thousands of customers with the same results.

spectro 75/140 6 speed is what bakers puts in there trannys if harley ran this stuff from the get-go we would need this thread ! I use Amsoil 75/140 in my 4-speed trannys and Spectro in the 6spds !
Harleys brainless effort to get better gas milage by telling us to use SYN 3.. 20/50 motor oil instead of a severe gear type gear lube! any transmission style gears will turn easier in 50 wt then 140 wt ! Less Drag...its simple but do you want to rebuild more often and wear things out sooner? I like the cushion feel when shifting, and finding N easier too! These are big heavy cut gears....not a swiss watch...
Nice try Harley ! We may buy and ride your bikes but your nation wide level of service and recomandations on what to run in them....... SUCKS!

Just run syn 75/140 and leave it in for 10K. It has the pour weight of motor oil, so it can't not get to the bearings. And it has the load rating of 140 wt gear oil, so it will protect the gears and sliders.
The MoCo uses straight cut gears, so they make noise. Noise is vibration, and vibration is wear. Add a few cheap bearings and some are going to fail.
As to the thick syrupy red stuff. The issue is that it tends to hold chips in suspension and repeatedly circulate them through the gear train. Or so the theory goes.
In my experience, I have seen the same PN: ball bearing used with 140wt, 90wt, 75wt, 10-30 motor oil, and dextron. So the bearing doesn't really care. And in a 5 or 6 speed MoCo tranny, the ball bearing runs partially submerged in oil. So if oil not getting to the bearing is an issue, then the tranny is way low on oil.

Well, I have the bike back and took it right out on a 800+mile ride, the trans is working like it always as, noisy as hell in 1st and 5th, but okay other then that.
I asked for all the old parts back, and they were not in the saddle bags when I got it home, I called and ask and they said they will hold it for me. For there warranty I am running the Harley formula +.
I will get the part tomorrow and mail them down to Red Line to tell me what I think we all know.......I will keep you'all in loop.
But not holding my breath at all.

On my 2010 street glide I had been using Syn 3 in the tranny with no problems but thought I would give the Redline Shock Proof Heavy a try based on others experience. To date I haven't had any problems but am not overly impressed with it either. In fact I think tomorrow I am going to drain the tranny when I do an oil change on the engine. Will probably go with Fomula Plus like I use in the primary.
The tranny oil was changed about 3500 miles ago but hasn't impressed me enough to leave it in.
