Barnett Carbon Fiber Vs. Kevlar?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi All

I am rebuilding the clutch on my 2000 Electrglide Clasic Bagger. I have been doing some research on clutch rebuild kits for the last few days. I was at the local Harley Dealer the other day and was infromed that Harley and Screaming Eagle Does not offer a rebuild kit. So after a little research, I decided to go with the Barnett Extra plate rebuild kit. My question is which is better Kevlar plates or Carbon fiber plates? I haven't bought anything yet. I figured that I would get some feed back before purchase

Thanks
Sinn

Sinn...Never tried the carbon plates. I have used about 6-8 Kevlar kits and love them. They hold great, yet engage like stock. I run them with ATF.

The extra plate kits are good, but the new technology is single sided plates.

In a conventional clutch design there are friction plates and steel plates. The friction plates have material on both sides.

Single sided clutches have friction material on one side of both types of plates.

Alto makes the clutch plates for almost everyone. All of the car manufacturers and motorcycle clutches get their plates from Alto.

I spent perhaps an hour talking with the Alto sales director at the last V-Twin Expo. He went into great detail about the single side technology, how cars have had it for several years, etc.

I put a Carbon, single sided clutch pack in my red FXR last month and really like it.

Alto does not sell retail, and I was unable to find the carbon single sided clutch in any of the big retail catalogs, but did find it on the AIM website.

just took my clutch apart and back togather last night....looking at another problem.
20,000 not so easy miles and it still looks brand new.
Barnett Kevlar with SE spring
B&M trick shift. sounds like a roots blower on a smallblock chevy but seems to work good.

I've read that one difference is heat expansion. I don't remember which one has the 'problem' but one of them has a tendency to expand when it gets hot which can cause an intermittent clutch drag problem. Can't find the article online where I read it. So take it with a grain of salt.

From my research its a toss up between stock, kevlar and carbon clutch plates and which one is best. They all work very well when adjusted properly and the correct spring for the size of your motor.

Other then replacing the clutch plates, what else do you need to swap out and why?

This is the current state of the art for motorcycle clutch plates.
