Inner Primary Bearing Race - how to remove without the tool

I just replaced my shifter shaft seal and I'm installing a chrome inner primary. I bought the Baker Hi-Torque bearing for the inner primary. First I have to remove the race from the transmission shaft.

Any thoughts?

get the tool and save the shaft -you can sell it or just borrow one

I used a dremel and scored a deep groove in the race. Be careful not to go through the race into the shaft. You only have to go 1/2 way through then tap it with a chisel.

That was the approach I was thinking of taking.

Done it many time like that with no problems. When the race walks in to the seal, you have no choice but to cut. I use the dremel with a cut off wheel. Takes a bit of time, but doesnt cut fast and is accurate. Cut 1/2-3/4 through it and take a chisel and a hammer and tap, it should split.

Yep, already have the Cometic seals. Borrowing the tools this week. Should have everything buttoned up next weekend.

This is very cool. Thanks Guys! But I still have a question. The OEM outer race is press-fit into the inner primary, and the OEM inner race is press-fit onto the mainshaft, so one of these must not be a press-fit on the new bearing or we wouldn't be able to just put the inner primary back on? Am I missing something?

If installing the Baker bearing, it's pressed into the primary. The inner race of the bearing slides on the mainshaft when installing the inner primary.

OK. I kinda guessed that would be the case. Cuz the primary side is pressed and set between two retaining rings. I need to go in and change the mainshaft seal and don't want to get stuck on something stupid. Weather's starting to get nice, ya know?

Speaking of seals, I know 3-4 other guys that have the same leak. Are there any better mainshaft seals or kits out there? Maybe Cometic or somebody? One guy had his fixed at the stealer and it was leaking again 3 months later. I wouldn't mind replacing a $2 seal all the time if it was a 10 minute job!

I'm putting Cometic seals in mine. Fab'ed a bunch of tools from various pieces of PVC for the install. For the mainshaft seal get a 3/4" coupling from Home Depot for .35 cents. File flush the shoulder from the inside so it'll fit over the splines. Grind off about
.045" of material about 1/4" from one end so the coupling will push the seal inside the main gear. Tap in the seal with the coupling using a 15/16" deep well socket. Worked pretty good. Beats spending $$$ for a tool hopefully I'll only use once.

For the main seal get a PVC 3" to 2" inside bushing / adapter. Again file the inside shoulder so it will clear the main gear splines. The seal starts easy in the case by hand. Use a piece of 2" PVC to send it home.
