Leaking Primary

2002 Nighttrain, 12K miles. Looks like Primary Fluid leaking on the inside onto the belt. Is this the shaft seal, Not sure but would like to fix it himself.

There are several seals that could be leaking:

Mainshaft seal on the inner primary cover.
Main drive gear to mainshaft seal.
Main drive gear seal/spacer.
Shift shaft seal.
Starter jackshaft seal.

To access these seals you must remove the outer primary cover, clutch, compensator, primary chain tensioner, primary chain and inner primary cover.

To replace the main drive gear seal and spacer you would also have to remove the front pulley.

You will need some special tools to do this job but even with the expense of the tools I think you will spend less than paying a shop to do the job.

Lots of folks here to talk you through the job.

Weeds,

You'll do fine fixing this yourself if you listen to the major members here. I had this exact problem. I didn't get to the bottom of it until I scrubbed the leaky area clean with hot soapy water, then dried it, then took a short ride to determine the source. You need to do this. This is how I determined I had an inner primary seal leak. That's my project this winter. Good luck.

Thats a lot of possible problems. I will scrub it down and try to identify. It will also be my winter project. I appreciate the info, gives me a place to start. I was hoping some one would tell me it was a simple gasket that was inexpensive and would only take ten minutes to replace. I know, wishful thinking.

I have a small leak at the same area, it is the transmission fluid ( redline pepto) .Is this the same thing as stated above? I'm planning on doing a complete engine rebuild this winter so I will have most of the components off anyway. What special tools are needed. Something that can be rented at AutoZone?

Thanks
Tim
