5sp gear change

Last winter I installed an S&S 113ci in my '91 Softail.

Entire primary is stock.

Put in a used Baker 5sp trans.

I dont have a tach on the bike, but I can tell that the RPM'S dont change very much at all from 4th to 5th. I even find myself trying to shift again because of the high motor rev's.

Since I was going to pull out the Baker and re-install the old 5sp I began to wonder (oh-oh, this is never good), Could I change out the main drive gear and 5th gear counter-shaft gear to ultimately reduce RPM'S at 70mph?

At one time I did have a tach on this same bike and RPM'S were about 2800 at 70mph. This was when everything was stock.

I've read about changing motor and clutch sprockets and trans and rear wheel sprockets, but cant seem to find any info on this particular type of change.

If this is feasible, what gear ratio should I look for?

Many years ago (60's & 70's) I changed out many ring and pinion gears on cars to change performance levels. But that was years ago and those were cars.

Any advice, except bad, would be appreciated.

BTW, the entire bike will be apart this winter, so I am not looking for the quickest fix. Just a reliable one.

Probably best to contact Baker. I dont think it will work, as the gear mesh of 5th gear has to mesh with all others. If the ratios dont coincide, it wont work. Probably cheaper, easier and more effective to swap motor or belt sprockets.

Shows what happens when I start wondering. I didn't even think of contacting them. Thank you.

You can`t change your gearing by changing the main drive gear, because in a 5 speed tranny you are in direct drive when it is in 5th gear.
The main drive gear is locked to the mainshaft, and is not being driven by the countershaft (Hope that made sense).
