5th gear whine / Baker F6F

My warranty just ran out a few weeks back and I put a Baker F6F kit in to correct the imaginary whine. The fifth gear from the countershaft has a groove cut all the way around it and there was metal filings on the tranny drain plug. I was told by three stealerships and Harley directly that there was nothing wrong. I fixed the annoying whine thinking it was just by design but now that I found this groove cut into the fifth gear I wonder if the moco should pay. Good Luck , right?

i have a o9 rkc everyone tells me the whine is because 5th gear are straight cut not helical and therefore make sound.as far as the groove is it in the gear tooth face or on the end of the gear tooth?

Dont think that groove was causing the whine. Most stock tranny's have a groove thats machined in for one reason or another. How you like the f6f?

The picture shows the groove although not all that clear. It is around the circumference of the gear as if something came in contact while it was rotating. The service manual shows no groove and I have never seen one like that in all the gearboxes and transmissions I have either had apart or seen apart. Not to say I'm any kind of expert or anything. Ironically the 2010 transmission has a modified countershaft and helical cut fifth gear and they actually advertise it as "the new quieter fifth gear".

The F6F seems to be a good fix. 5th is as smooth and quiet as it should be. I also noticed if I take off harder than normal the clutch lever doesn't "wiggle" in my hand. The billet trap door really looks good with no crossover pipe covering it up. I think it was worth the $600 I spent doing it but I still think Harley should pay the bill.

with the pic you posted id say it was machined in,if it was a case/obstruction it should only be one gear.and it also looks like your having some lube problems on the outer bearing due to the discoloration

TXCHOP , Thanks for the photo. There I was thinking I found something new to argue with Harley about but as always they win again.

Now that I have a motorcycle that no longer sounds like a dump truck, I'm going to ride and enjoy!
