I'm not sure where to start

Hi all,

I was riding my 01 Ultra (with 6 speed gearset) a couple of weeks ago, I was slowing down for a intersection and downshifted and then started to accelerate and the bike made a strange clunk sound and it wasn't accelerating anymore. the bike was running but I coasted to a stop on the side of the rode. I shut off the bike and looked around to see if the belt broke or what else could be wrong and the only thing I could see was oil dripping from between the tranny and inner primary.

Once it was towed home and I got it on the lift I pulled the primary inspection cover and saw it had the proper amount of oil in it, I then drained the tranny and it was very low on oil.

I was wondering if someone has any idea what the problem could be.

Thanks for reading my rambling story.

David

Have you tryed putting it in gear since. I would try without the engine running and the bike on the lift see if you can shift through te gears.

Since the oil was coming from the tranny, and it was coming out on the primary side, I would guess it is the main shaft seal. You might have fried your tranny as indicated with the big clunk noise and lack of acceleration. Was there alot of metal shavings in the tranny oil?

There were no shavings in the oil or on the drain plug.

Well thats surprising yet promising. The low oil in the tranny may be a red hearing. If your tranny had grenaded, you would have seen metal in the tranny oil when you drained it.

However, I would definitely start doing some exploratory surgery. Start with the primary -> clutch -> then into the tranny. Lots of things could cause the symptoms you describe. So its kind of hard to narrow it down on the forum. Just take your time and you should find the problem fairly quickly. Good luck...

Do you have power to the rear wheel? If so in all gears? Could be a busted main shaft that pushed the bearing out and along with it the mainshaft seal. As other said, some investigative surgery is on order.

Last season, i had a customer split 5th gear(cs) into 2 pieces. Did just as you describe. easy to pull the trans top cover off and take a look.
