Sticking Clutch

Hi Guys,

Just replaced the oil seal on the gearbox and on re-assembling the primary side am having problems with the clutch, it's a five stud basket and springs instead of the three and the hassel I am having is clutch drag. With the bike running put her in gear and she wants to move forward, rev the bike up and the clutch feels disengaged, no drag, and then gradually the drag re-appears after a couple of seconds with the clutch lever pulled, I have adjusted the plate as the book says but this is with the three spring clutch, is the five spring different or I have just got dirty plates?

Forgot to say the bike is a 1982 FXRS

Thanks

Brian

Clutch are just weird. I have tried tapping the shaft on primary side with rubber mallet. My problem typically has been to hard to pull. Where I end up taking the balls apart and redoing them. Cover them in grease to hold them in place.

If you touched the lever with the clutch off, your balls are out of whack. But that usually shows up as hard or won't pull.

loosen everything , on your basket tighten your adjuster screw till you feel tention then loosen it 1/2 turn - put a nickel between your clutch lever and tighten your clutch adjustment on the line then try taking it for a ride.

I think you are going to have to get a service manual that covers your clutch, many guys here think that all clutches are like the ones in their (late model) bikes...The five stud clutch was used until around mid year `84 I think.
