Changing drive belt, '88 E.G. Classic

A friend of mine is bringing his '88 E.G.Classic over next weekend and we're going to try and change the drive belt. I changed mine a couple of years ago on my '95 Ultra and never had to remove the swingarm completely, just took out the rubber on the sides and I think maybe moved the pivot shaft towards the right side some. I was able to slide the belt in between the frame and swingarm. It's a little foggy now, I don't remember stuff very long. Any way will I be able to do this on the '88 also, I have a clymer book and it shows that the swingarm is changed after '89. Thanks, Len

get access to your rear tire, loosen tire adjustment screws so you can push the rear wheel all the way forward. then unscrew all primary bolts to remove and access the belt slide belt off trans pulley, slide belt off rear wheel pulley replace with new belt set your rear wheel adjustment again. replace primary gasket add fluid and scoot!

This will never work, you have to get the belt around the swingarm, between the arm and the frame!!

Shoebox-from this post it is obvious you haven`t done the job.

Len, never changed one on a dresser, only a softail, I pulled the whole swing arm, then realized I only had to pull the center swing axis tube.

Well I "Got-er-Done" Friday. In answer to my question... yes you can take out the swingarm bolt on the left side, you my have to pry it out with tha rubber isolator like I did but it will come out, then pry out the rubber, slip out the old belt, in with the new belt, then re-assemble the primary. The whole job I think should take about 3 or 4 hours, It only took us 10 hours but we had a good time and consumed many tasty beverages!!! We must have done ok because all is well and on oil leaks have appeared , yet!
