Starters and exhaust brackets
Curious, how many of you had to grind your exhaust bracket to fit a 1.4kW starter? I would have thought 1.4 would be direct swap, they sorta advertise them that way.
I bought a Drag made in Canada, same as Allballz, probably same place. The exhuast bracket from 01 and 07 did not fit. I go back to the indie, he says ya that custom for ya. I was so pissed off, I told them to pretty much stuff it.
Maybe I was wrong and it was normal. Shame on the starter companies for not saying that in the instuctions. If the indie would would have just said, I'll grind it for ya, it will take 5 minutes, I probably would have kept it, and he would have made a sale.
I was also worked up, cause the parts guy tried to sell me a starter clutch, saying it was seperate. Then when I came back, he said he installed 5 of these last year. Then how come he didn't know they came as a unit?
Was looking at Terry starters. Made in the US, and experience with them?

Last try. When installing a aftermarket starter, did you have to grind the exhaust bracket that bolts to the starter?

Assuming the aftermarket starter is the same dimensions as HD.
Check the starter alignment from the primary side to ensure the starter is fit square into the mounting hole. The starter can appear to be aligned on the locating pin and bolt holes when installing from the right side of the bike. However, as the starter must be inserted thru the frame at a down angle, it may be slightly cantered down rather than level. This may make it appear that the ends of the exhaust bracket need to be filed down to match the starter mounting holes. IF you have to grind the exhaust bracket, a metal file should do the trick, but I would think you would not have to file it down.

Grind it down, 'Zerk. What choice do you have? If you ball it up, that bracket can't be that expensive to replace.

The started bolted up fine. It was the exhaust bracket that didn't line up. Just curious if this is typical, or just with the Drag ones. I kinda told the the indie to shove it, so I need something else.
If they would have mentioned filing it when I bought it, or simply grinded the bracket when I came back, they would have made the sale. I don't have bench grinder. But I do like buying tools.
