Ran tranny dry

So a buddy of mine noticed a squeeling noise in 4th gear, pulled over and discovered that the drain plug fell out of his tranny. Bone dry. Bought a new plug, put a quart of oil in it continued the trip. Put over 200 miles on it, no noise, no problems.

He plans to take it apart this winter, but wondering if he can make it through the season.

Anyone have this happen to them?

Happens all the time....lol. Run it, check the drain plug for chunks.....inspect it when the seasons over. I've seen them go over a thousand miles lube free....didn't happen to me but I got to inspect it.

Yup, agree with Bean. Should be fine for now as they never really get bone dry as the fluid can cling for a while depending on the type.

Hell if it's a 4-speed it probably won't even need to be gone thru after the season.

My shovel used to leak so bad that I'd just add oil when it started to get noisy and hard to shift!
