Clutch basket failure
Update: I took the basket into a local (independent) shop. I wanted to know what could have caused this so (maybe) I can prevent it in the future.
The interesting thing is that one of the first questions they asked me was if I (they assumed I was the one who pushed the bearing out) had pushed the bearing out crooked.
When I explained I didn't do it - they quickly said "I am NOT saying the other shop screwed up, but I don't see any other way that crack could have happened". He explained the biggest clue was the raised ridge pointed to by the arrows in the second picture. If the bearing were pushed out unevenly then the side with the pressure would raise just such a ridge before it broke. Note that the other side of the basket is smooth. Also note the bearing itself has no scars on the outside.
So questions:
Has anyone seen this kind of failure before?
Does this really look like it was pushed out crooked?
Thanks
Terry

Hi,
As some of you may remember I recently replaced the compensator trying to get rid of a noise in my primary. Because I was in there I decided to have the clutch hub (double ball) bearing replaced. Took the basket/hub to the local hd dealer who was going to install the new bearing. Turns out the inner basket has a nasty crack (where the bearing is supposed to reside). Ok that maybe where the noise was really coming from.
Bike: 2000 FXDX Dyna with <> 25K
Several questions:
1. What could cause such a failure.
2. What are my options for replacement:
A. the full kit for $300.00 (OEM: 37802-98B)
B. A new shell/basket (37707-98A)
C. A better aftermarket solution
While the easiest route would be a whole new OEM assembly - I wonder if I would be better off to replace it with something with a bit more beef.
Any after market suggestions?
Thanks
Terry
