Inner primary mainshaft oil seal won't stay in!

98 Dyna Wide Glide

I've never seen this before. When I press the oil seal into the back-side of the inner primary cover and then remove the press, the seal begins to sort of... ooze... out of the case! Within a few minutes the seal will pop out all the way.

I've installed the seal with the side labeled "Oil Side" facing into the area where the primary chaincase lubricant will reside. I've compared this seal to the original and it seems to be the same dimensions.

Since the back of this seal floats in air (i.e., doesn't abutt another part), this obviously concerns me.

Any thoughts on why this is happening and how to correct it?

I would try installing it dry after cleaning the seal bore with brake cleaner. (wow, rides a Harley AND eats lo-fat yogurt!)

Thanks DDuess: I thought about cleaning / installing dry, but I'm concerned that over time the part may still vibrate out, since it seems to want to come out.

As it stands, if I put the seal in dry and it stays in, I'll be constantly worried about it coming loose until I know why it's wanting to come out in the first place, ya know?

lol... I thought someone would point out the yogurt!

I initially made the same mistake thinking I’d apply a little silicon seal to the oil seal; popped right out within a minute or so. Cleaned it all up nice and dry and reinstalled, no problem since.

Excellent news, mlewis! I'll just clean it up, reassemble and see how it goes. Glad to find someone with the same experience so quickly!!!

Inner primary mainshaft oil seal: should it seat completely?

Looks like I've resolved the issue of my seal not staying put, but now I'm concerned that it protrudes a bit from the back of the inner primary (about 0.04").

Is this normal?

Man, this seems like a bad design.

if it's the correct seal installed properly it's flush... If it is the correct seal check to make sure the oil side of the seal is in the right direction...
