Loud primary
I have 8k miles on my 06 UC and the primary is very loud, sounds like a can of bolts churning around. Is this normal, I didn't notice it being quite so loud before. I am running Syn. Mercon V ATF in the primary. Is there something else better for that, or could something else be up?
Thanks,
Steve

Some o7's were noisy, and HD created a "fix" called the IDS for the final drive.
Never heard of anything on the 06's.
Might I suggest you use the recommended primary oil instead of ATF?

The big "whatsit" nut coming loose in there? I can't remember what it's called, but not uncommon. CRS here....maybe someone else can remember the name.

Well, so far it sounds like I should pull the primary cover and check everything out for sure. Also get something different for primary fluid.
Is that the compensator nut that you're talking about maybe?
Thanks,
Steve

Hopefully this weekend won't be raining, so I will be pulling the primary cover it looks like.
Thanks,
Steve

I guess that I should have done that when I changed primary fluid. Duh.... I was suspecting something was not good, and ran out of time to pull the cover and check things out. Haste makes waste I guess...
Thanks,
Steve

Well, I got lucky no rain.
It looks like the chain was loose, had about 3/4" slack hot, not good.
I adjusted it to 1/2" which is right in the middle of recommended.
Filled it with Mobil 1 V-Twin 20-50 and it is really nice now.
Much quieter, smoother on the clutch engagement too.
Thanks,
Steve

I'll bet you found some wear marks in the upper part of the primary. Very loose chains eat into the aluminum. Makes a racket.......

Yes, there were a few marks, fortunately I didn't put too many miles on it since it started getting louder.
Much better now though.
Thanks,
Steve

That's ok, it got fixed, and you were right about the chain.
I would have picked up some Amsoil, but they didn't have it, so got the MB1 V-twin, I figured that should work pretty well.
Thanks,
Steve
