I have a 99 FLHT. 86K on the clock had a barnett rebuild kit put in recently. Still have problems finding neutral and when in neutral it some times drops into first with no help from me. What would be the the first thing to check? The shift drum and forks or the gear set?
If I have to replace one thing should I do the other as well? I appreciate any help you guys could give. Thank, Eric
This could be a simple adjustment on the shifter pawl. There is a stud with a lock nut right behind the shift lever that goes into the tranny. The stud has an offset pin which controls how far the shifter pawl will travel. If you look in the manual, it should show you a description and exactly how to adjust it. This usually involves removing the tranny top and adjusting the pin to be in the middle when tranny is in 2nd gear. It is usually very hard to get to the stud and lock nut without removing the inner primary, but with some patience and the correct tools, you should be able to get it. You might be able to adjust this a little each way until it gets better without removing the tranny top. Very small increments though because it is very touchy. Clear as mud???
