02 FXDL shifting problem

First a short background. I laid my 02 FXDL down on the left side avoiding a car a few weeks back. Among the items damaged the shift lever was bent backwards. Judging from the damage to the shift lever I believe the transmission was jammed into 2nd very hard. We got the bike running last night after replacing all the external damage and went for a ride around the block to check things out. It became immediately apparent that the transmission has got some problems internally. It does not shift from 1st to 2nd in one motion like it should. The upshift from 1st puts it in N and then a second upshift will put it in 2nd. I suspect the shift mechanisim is damaged internally. I might add that I was in 1st gear at the time the bike went down. I am looking for advice a from someone with experience working on these 5 speeds as to what I need to be looking for when I take the cover off. Thanks.

I removed the transmission cover this evening and watched the shifter pawl rotate the cam. Sometimes the 1st 2nd shift works normally other times the cam seems to hang in between detents but not really in neutral. In that position the shifter pawl does not engage in either direction. I realize this is not a syncronized transmission so have to keep moving the rear wheel for the gears to engage. I suspect the shifter pawl is bent but I don't see anything obvious. Any tips on what to look for would be appreciated.
