Starter jackshaft seal orientation

Can anyone tell me with certainty which way the new style Harley starter jackshaft seal is to be positioned in the inner primary? I did a search on the forum and came across the attached picture that the original poster used with the same question. Although he got several replies to his post his question remained unanswered.

The new style jackshaft seal has a double lip. There is a smaller lip that protrudes from the back of the main part of the seal. Does the protruding part face the starter or away from the starter?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Jay

IMJ~~~

Are you familiar with Service Bulletin M-1161?
This service bulletin addresses the "improved" starter jackshaft lip seal HD# 12066A. It tells how to install it....your local dealership should be able to print you up one.

Also are you aware of Service Bulletin M-1148?
Which deals with a NEW Inner Primary Mainshaft Oil Seal Change which is HD# 12052A. Since you are at the location of the "Jackhaft Lip Seal you might as well be replacing this one as well. Once Again your local HD dealership will be able to print up this Service bulletin as well.

Also....another note....since from what I am reading I sense what you are doing.....once you remove the inner primary, make sure you REMOVE all of the SILICONE from the bolt holes that have silicone in them or on them. I replaced with Napa black high temp RTV silicone on each bolt that had it previously as well as the bolt hole. I used a tappit to remove the old silicone out of the bolt hole threads as well prior to adding new silicone. Remember that silicone does not adhere to old silicone. I also cleaned the entire inner primary while it was out with electra contact cleaner by CRC. Take your time....do it out side that silcone will get everwhere when it starts to come off....it can be very frustrating to get it all off of the inner primary but you have to.

"Classic"

Classic,
Thanks for the reply. I went back to the dealer and asked for a copy of service bulletin M-1161. I scanned a copy of it and included it in this post. Thanks also for the additional info on the inner primary mainshaft seal. I got a copy of that service bulletin as well. I am replacing the stock bearing and seal with a Baker Hi Torque bearing which does away with the press on inner bearing race on the mainshaft. When I took my inner primary off to replace a loose trans. sprocket I found that the inner race moved in towards the main drive gear. I had to use a bearing separator in order to get the race off the mainshaft. The Baker bearing comes with a seal that rides directly on the mainshaft without the inner race.

Thanks again,

Jay

Thanks for the copy of the service manual IMJ. I used the new seal with the old instructions and got it in upside down. Fortunately I caught it before locking things down. Back to HD for another new seal!

to answer this without a pic I just did that and when I brought my inner primary and gasket down there to check the counter guy with wrenching experience said that the smallest part of the seal touches the shaft first. So the flat side down and the grooves facing out. I know it would seem that for pressing it in you would leave flat side out as a socket fits nicely for the tap in but it goes the other way I was told as I had to get another seal. But in hindsite I would have reused the new one I popped it out with out any damage but again it was only 5 bucks. Got a back up incase I gotta go in again. I hope not for a while...
