Aftermarket tranny for 4-speeds

My 85 FXWG is fitted with the 4 speed 'pancake' top tranny (along with belt final drive and diaphragm clutch as standard.)
After close on 90,000 miles its getting a little tired. I have been looking for an 5 or 6 speed aftermarket replacement (Preferably the Baker 6 in a 4 speed), but all the ones I've checked out state that they are suitable for replacement on models up to 1984. Why should this be? I'm sure that it would be pretty straightforward to change over, maybe having to switch out inner primaries, clutch and going to a prestolite starter. But before laying out big bucks on a new tranny, I would like to hear from any guys who have made the switch, and what was necessary to do it.

Have you checked the Ultima transmissions? I seem to recall that they may have what you're looking for. You can get some really good deals on Ebay for their transmissions as well.

I checked out Ultimas' website, but they only seem to have trannies to fit 5-speed frames. As my FXWG was a transitional model from the Shovel to Evo motor, I think I will have to go the route of mix'n'match regarding clutch and final drive. Anywayz...Thanks for the suggestion
