License Plate Light

Hi,

I have a 2006 Ultra and was informed that my tail light in the assembly right below the tourpack was burnt out. No biggie..replaced the bulb, but it still doesn't light up. All other lights on the tourpack and on the fender work as they should along with headlights etc.

Pulled out the fuse box and checked them all anyway and they are good. Also checked input to and output from each fuse and a solid 12.5V at each point. Next step was to check the bulb socket itself. 2 of 3 wires get 12.5V only when the front or rear brake is applied and the 2nd filament of the bulb lights up as it should. 3rd wire in the bulb socket is ground, so won't have anything there.

Trying to figure out where to go from here and hopeing for suggestions.

1. Is that tail light assy supposed to be on to illum the lic. plate in the first place? If not..guess I can stop there.

2. If the 1st filament of the bulb is to be lit, any ideas why I wouldn't be getting a constant 12V on atleast 1 wire to lite it up when all other rear lighting works and that the 12.5V would only be there when brake applied?

It would be thought that one wire would be constant 12.5V for the tail/lic lite, 2nd wire hot only when brake applied and 3rd wire is common ground for both fils.

Thanks for the assist.

Might have to check the connections. The way the tail light gits so much water and dirt , there is a possibility you might have to replace the tail light assembly, Most of it is plug connectors.
You can see if you take it apart.

I had to replace one on a 07 bike and it was 9 months old that had burn't out.

The light should have 12v whenever the ignition switch is turned on to light up the tail and license plate light (running light). The black wire is your ground, the red/yellow wire is your brake and the blue wire is your running light. Blue wire should have 12v when the ignition is on, r/y should have 12v when the brake is on. Ground has to be your reference on both voltages. Hope this helps.

Went back out to do some tinkering around...do have good power as it is supposed to be where the bulb socket plugs in and also into the bulg socket itself however, still no taillite and only brake lite.

Was able to push the bulb a bit further into the socket and it lites up. Re-assemble the light assembly and get everything screwed back into place, turned off ignition switch thinking great, got that fixed!! Go into the house to grab the wallet so I can zip over to the local Wal-Mart and pick up a replacement for the 15A fuse I blew...turn on the ignition switch and darn...light not working again. Took everything apart and pushed the bulb back in and it lites up. sooo..guess I definitely need to get a new socket tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't think anyone will give you a hard time but I think if you posted this in the EFI thread you would probably get a better more informed and specific reply. Welcome

My First Harley

I picked up my 09 Ultra today. Traded in a 2004 Goldwing. I honestly didn't think I could smile as much when I was riding. The only thing the Wing has over the Ultra is engine power. Not that the Ultra is under powered. I only put 100 miles on it today so the engine is still tight. I do think the power is great. The ride is more comfortable. This bike seems much more nimble. The ergonomics are completely perfect for me. I just wonder why it took me so long! BTW the fit and finish is simply amazing. The clutch is much easier on the arm musclkes than the hydrolic clutches on my previous bikes. So the initial ride score is a 9.5 out of 10 in my book.

This forum is really inofrmative too so I made 2 wonderful discoveries this week!

Mufflers would be the easy way to go... slap them on and get the sound you like. If you go to a full system, you may need to get the flash and maybe a tunner or Power Commander. This is where it starts getting pricy. I actually put a nice 2-into-1 on my 03 and the sound killed my ear. So be careful and look around... Bub7, Vance & Hines, Pythons are nice and Rinehart's are good too. cost ~ 375-500.00 depending on the muffler and where you get them.. shop online is the best buy.

2009 Ultra

Picked up my new Ulta last week. Red Hot Sunglow with back rest luggage rack, added highway pegs fairing bra , bag covers, and dual head sets, great ride. Have a 2006 Dyna street Bob that works well, but the Ulta is in a class of it's own. Wife loves it and we have plans for some long rides in the future.
One question? I am planning to take the bike in this week for the 1000 mile service and am planning to up grade to the stage 1 dwon load with screming eagle slip on mufflers, and air cleaner. Has anyone made this mod yet, and what were the results. I understand the Screming Eagle mufflers are slightly louder then stock, but not as loud as the other pipes on the market. I am looking for a performance improvement but not loud pipes.

I did exactly what you are thinking about 2 weeks ago to my 09 Ultra Red Hot Sunglow. The Screamin Eagle mufflers are quieter at idle and give the bike back the Harley growl when you get on it, they are not as loud as the Reinhardt’s on my 06 Street Glide. When fist installed the Screamin Eagle mufflers they sounded a little tinny but after 100 mile it was completely gone, now after 2400 miles on them (Street Vibrations trip) I enjoy them more then the Reinhardt’s!!!
It most defiantly helped with the performance and got 4mpg more

New

I'm new to this forum and am probably not doing this right (not computer savvy). I crashed my electraglide back in July and have since had it repaired. However, the fairing is still dipping down slightly on the right side. Everytime I take it in they tell me its fixed then whe I take it home it is still there. Could the trees be bad. They said they checked everything. Would someone give me some guidance on this. Thanks.

Check out the Bub7's I was told they are very nice the 09's run the converter in the header, not the mufflers, so I was told they are better then stock and not much louder.

I will see one of these days!
