I run premium only the higher the better. On my road trip last year I came across one of the western states I believe it was Montana or North Dakota where I could only find 89. My bike pinged so bad my wife asked what the noise was coming from the engine. Has to be bad if she noticed. Anyway 93 is best and it goes down hill from there. I now carry octane boost with me on my road trips. Not going there again.

Most of the station's premium around here is 92 or 93 no ethanol. With 87 & 89 as the other grade choices. Since I can buy 93 for the same price as 92 thats what I generally run.
Riding around this great country I have found anything from 89 to 93 and many with ethonal.
When I got the bike re-dyno'd last month I purposely ran the tank about dry and went to one of the few stations that sold 91
Figured dyno'd at 91 would be better for a general touring tune then 93.

the lowest octane you can get by on is best. faster burning and more power. my 05, built had to have highest possible octane or it would ping and real quick. my 08 has cranes 300 cam which has more over lap and and less cranking compression than stock and i have done data runs to see if spark knock is present and it hasent been. but i only run regular on long highway trips when i know i will not be getting, in to it hard. higher octane burns slower and ignites slower. around town i run hard so i look at it as insurrance. i once was out in the middle of no where on my 05 and gassed up at a walmart station with premium 10 miles later it was spark knocking bad so you never know on the no name or cheap stations.

Burn speed and octane are really not connected!

It should be noted that octane rating does not relate to the energy content of the fuel (see heating value), nor the speed at which the flame initiated by the spark plug propagates across the cylinder. It is only a measure of the fuel's resistance to autoignition.

That's my understanding.

Premium on the left coast is like water
is there any evidence that octane boost products actually work? How 'bout running cooler plugs?

Octane boost only works in small points. Like tenths...not full figures. A can may take a 5 gallon tank of 91 and make it 91.5. Its not what its made out to be. A 5 minute google search will yield tons of info on this subject.
