So it will cost you an extra buck to fill it up. Are you shiiitting me?
If the manual calls for 91, then use 91 or higher.

91 is Premium in the western US.

87 unless it's 90 degrees. Harley has to account for all conditions in the states and with 9.3 compression stock, if it has no ping the bike doesn't know the difference.

Yes, it does know the difference. Do a dyno run with both, then say that. Also look at the carbon buildup comparison and then tell me that.

And if you could see knock sensor activity.....But, then again, its not my bike. I think subjecting a 20k bike to the abuse of low octane gas just to save a buck on a fillup is a dumbass idear.

when I got my bike built up to 95 inches the builder told me I could run 87, he said it performed better = burns faster= I never had much success with it not pinging but that's what I was told.

That's what I hear.
Course I hear the opposite - high octane will cause carbon build up, switch a few tanks.
It's all magic I tell 'ya - what to do, what to do?

I've taken plenty apart with only premium use and have tons of carbon. There is not enough additives in most brands of fuel to clean very well. I use some injector/valve cleaner a couple times a year. I don't drag race my bagger and the knock sensors are doing what there suppose to. I do use premium in my fatboy cause it's not stock and ride it hard and doesn't have knock sensing capability.

I agree with YankeeBob, you spend 20+K on a bike with a five gal tank and your worried about 25 cents a gal ? Maybe you shoulda bought a moped

Bike gets 40 mpg, high test fuel @ $3.999, 200 miles = $20.00
4 wheeler 13.33 mpg, reg fuel @ $3.459, 200 mile = $51.89
Bike saves dough, savings = $31.89
I say run 91 octane and ride as much as possible!

All motor manufactures have and octain rating for each engine they produce. This is used to prevent premature detation or in other words spark knock that can cause major engine damange. A motor that does not pre denoate with 89 octain will not run any better using 93 octain. With this being said yes even using 91 or 93 in my 05 classic it will at times spark knock. esp. sitting in traffic ect. It is an air cooled engine there for difficult to controll temp and there for the grater chance of pre denation that is just one reson Harley recommands 91 or 93. there are several other reasons compression. timing. leaner fuel ratios to meet epa regulations ect. It is not about making the bike run better but to help it from coming unglued.

fuel
I run 87 octane only when in the sticks where it is that or diesel choice is clear then.

Only save 50 cents or so per tank, not worth messing up engine.
