i bought a sportster sport because of the torgue and not because it is a woman's bike.

Yea, one of my riding buddies has a Deuce with stage one mods. He sometimes likes to kid me about my girl's bike, but he knows better. I got stage one mods on mine too. We got in a little race a few days ago. Now his bike is pretty hot but I took him off the line, and held the lead for a little while, but my front tire come off the ground about 6 inchs when I caught second gear, and I was still ahead of him about a bike length, until I decided to let off of the throttle a little and get the front wheel back on the ground, then I failed to stay in it hard enough and timed my shifting wrong and he finally got a small gap on me, before we shut them down.
That is the only time I have ever done that and I don't normaly ride like that or recomend anyone else doing it either. The funny thing about this is now, My buddy is thinking about spending another 3500 dollars in performance mods on his Deuce. We work together and it eats on him that he didn't smoke me any worse then he did.
By the way, I have been riding several bigger bikes lately, Metric and Harley and to tell you the truth, I do want a bigger bike one of these days but for normal short runs and around town, I prefer my sportster and I weight 230 plus.

ya know i've been thinkin about this and today it hit me i've got right around 10 grand in my ride and i was at an event today full of 16-30 grand bikes and while i know i'm biased min kicked ass over 90 percent of them. not baggin on their rides it is just that when 15+ grand is thrown down on a base bike makeing it "yours" has to have a little more sting. i love my sporty chopper. girls bike? yeah i guess the girls do love it to.

I've recently test rode a V-Rod and a Low Rider and both felt lighter and more well balanced than the Sportster. It doesn't matter if you're a girl or a boy the Sportster has to be one of the most difficult Harleys to ride.

For all of you sportster riders a question: I need to lower my 2003 hd883XLH. It has enormously high shocks. What size of shocks are considered standard shocks on a 2001 883custom?

on the cudstom i believe they are 11 1/2 or 11 3/4 shocks.

A Sportster a small bike? Thats bullshit.
If you compare the power of a Sportster in relation to the engine size with a big twin, a Sportster is definetly more powerful than a big twin.
900 or 1200 ccm small? - who ever says this, doesn't know what he's talking about.
I have a Road King, my wife has a 1200 Sportster. When we ride together, I sometimes have a hard time to follow her when she cranks this thing.
A Sportster is a great bike not only for beginners or women.
Ride whatever you feel like and give a sh.. what others say.

This is something that has been bugging me for awhile. How is the Sportster more difficult than all the other Harleys? I've been riding motorcycles all my life and have been lucky enough to ride all models of harleys from the shovelheads and ironheads to the new evolutions. I would have to say that easiest bike in the their lineup is the Lowrider with the Sportsters following a close 2nd. From their, the Softail and then the Electraglide being the most difficult due to it's size and weight. As for comfort though they are the highest on the list.
The Sportster seems to be the most nimble of the group also. They are easy to do maneuvers on and have the hp(stock) to get out of their own way. They are also a lot easier to make a u-turn with compared to the Softail and Electraglide.
I dunno.. maybe Sportsters seem easier to me because that is what I have been riding consistantly since I was 14 or just haven't ridin a Big Twin for a few years now. Either way I still don't seem them as being difficult.

It has been my experience that most people that really rag on Sporties used to own a Sportster and got really ragged on.  I used to percieve a Sportster as a starter/girl's bike, even though I did own one. When I was asked what kind of bike I had, I would say "Just a Sportster" almost apologetically. As I really started to evaluate the type of riding I do, my needs and my budget, the Sportster was actually perfect. No regrets here. I love my Sporty and I'm currently looking for another so that my father and I can ride together.

The difference isn't that significant but for the Sportster to weigh 100-200 lbs. lighter than bikes such as the V-Rod and Low Rider it doesn't really feel lighter. You can feel the bike's weight most when moving it from the side stand to the upright position and during slow speed manuvers. At speeds above about 20 mph they're all about the same.
I've rode a Ninja 500 which weighs about 100 lbs. less than the Sportster and you can tell. It feels as light as a feather.

Hello everybody, I am a new one to this forum, and it is very interesting discussion here 
I bought a brand new sportster hugger today, just can't wait riding it, and this is also the reason I am here.
I just have to say, that the reasons I bought my sportster are the following ones:
- I have never owned any bike before (an adept of motorbike course now),
- hugger seems the right one for me and I just love it's design (light, low seat, seems to be easy to ride for such unexperienced person like myself),
- I don't need to show myself and impress anybody, I just want to have fun riding my bike.
In fact at the start I considered Fat boy but I realised these is really a heavy bike, probably not easy to handle for such a beginer like me. I could afford any H-D bike, but I decided that I prefer to spend less money before I learn how to ride well and when I am totally convinced to a big bike like Fat boy.
Wish me good luck on my driving license exam.

Sigi, good luck with your new sportster. The hugger may be easier to ride than my XLH1200 due to the hight difference but I just bought a 98 Dyna Wide Glide and in some ways it seems easier to ride than the Sportster. I have also heard that the Fat Boy was one of the easiest Harleys to ride , however, I don't know that from personal experience.
Enjoy your sportster, trade or buy a bigger bike later if you want to, but if you set it up right, the sportster will do about anything you need it to.
