I started out with a Sportster, and traded to a soft tail when I started doing more distance riding - sporty was just too hard on my old bones - rattled my teeth any time I got over 55 mph. I never looked at it like a chick bike, and can tell you the softie is a lot easier to ride than the sporty was - so I don't get the relationship. When I see somebody on the highway on a sporty, I just admire the heck out of them.
To each his own - as long as you're on a Harley, that's what counts.

I used to hear all that talk also about it being a "girl's bike". But as life went I now own an 82 XLH with some goodies packed in the case's. And I now kick my self in the a** for not just getting one ever time I was just short of affording a big twin. I love the sporty and will never give it up . I know she ain't the fastest one but I have really pissed-off some *** crotch rocket's. I even one day while at a light this summer. Was waiting for the light to turn, then a couple of punk's on ***'s pull-up. They start the "girly crap" then do a smoke show. So with out a second though I light it up, while the light turn's green I just leaned back slightly an roared off into a wheelie. They fallowed me to the corner store and started out with a big WOW that was awsome from a harley. I just replied "yeah and it was in second gear on a four speed" From that they just stood there dumb founded. It made my day to say the least.

Here's a few replies to the Girls Bike/ Half a Harley comment

"Saying a Sportster is an entry level Harley is like saying you should buy a Corvette to work your way into a Suburban."

"Girl's bike?? Ever have a girl kick your @%#?"

"Half a Harley?? I only need half a Harley to beat your piece of %&#$."

"Ooo! A land yacht! Shall we call you "captain"?"

"I'll give you a head start, even."

"I have to ride a Sportster. My wife (or girl) won't LET me get a bigger bike, she says I've got too much between my legs already"

"how 'bout: the Sportster, "The King of Harleys".....good enough for Elvis, good enough for me!"

"You'd best figure out how your gonna explain to your wife how you got your @&% kicked by someone on a "girls bike"

"Sportsters are half a Harley? Yeah, the fast half!"

"Do you know what kind of motorcycle a REAL man rides? Any kind he damn well wants to!"

I honestly can say for shure and currently missplaced the lift spec's. But in late january I will be doing a minor tar-down to fix some oil leak's. I will then get the spec's for you on the cam's. As for the rest ; 1200 jug's, 10:5 poston's "modified", head's were worked over but stock valve size's, and runnig a big twin stock carb keihin ,1 3/4 drag's with the ole washer trick in them .well that about sum's it up. Oh yeah alot of tuning and dialing it in .

i think sportys are awesome bikes and would take one any day over a *** bike. i cant help it though but it cracks me up when someone refers to a sportster as a "piglet". just seems like everyone that has a sporty has a little inferior complex about it. just ride.

Yeah that would be cool to see what cams your running, just for comparison. When you say 1200 Jugs, Are these aftermarket jugs with a bogger bore to bring it to 1200 or are these Jugs off of a 1200 Shovelhead? If they are from the Shovel, the heads bolt right up? I was looking into the S&S Stroker kit, that will bring it up to 1200 cc's, but thats with the stock bore and a bigger stroke. Just curious as to what you meant?

Thanks
Mas

the jug's are S&S jug's that are big bore to bring it up to 1200 . Just using 1200 jug's won't give you 1200cc's due to the fact that the stroke is shorter . After all of the reading I have done and basic hand's-on wrenching, I have voted not to stroke mine . Cause after all the short stroke is a key elliment that give's the sporty it's quickness off the line and allow you to run higher rpm's. As with any motor the shorter the stoke the higher the rpm's the motor is capable of turning with less worry of the lower-end giving away. I know there will be many that will say the stroking won't hurt a thing, but if you want more mile's in-between rebuild's a non-stoker motor will last longer hand's down. Well that is if you ever really use the power it can give you . It's just a law of physic's that every one tries to over come. Some get thing's just right but, mostly there is alway's a down side .Well that's just my 2 cents.

Cool, Yeah I know all about the shorter stroke being able to spin higher RPMS, Thats why I'm not convinced I wanna do it. However the Stroker does provide big torque. Anyway, thats why when you mentioned the 1200 jugs, ny ears perked up. My next question would be where did you get them from and how long ago. I've been scouring all kinds of Catalogs and have seen nothing of the like about these S&S jugs for Ironheads. All I see are the ones for Shovels!

Well I un-fortunitly can't tell you were to get them as they were put on the bike long before it was mine . I only know what they are due to the numbers on the casting's that match some old catolog's from way back when my dad had a bike shop and some other ole' timers . It's really only a simple math problem to get the jug size needed to give you 1200cc's.
But just for the record with the stock stroke listed for my year bike (3.8125") it take's a 3.5" bore to give you a true 1200cc's+ . Plus when you realize that it is possible and has been done to see number's like 133 hp & 120 ftlbs of torque from a 74 cid's why bother with the stroker .

Hey, one more question... Would you mind giving me the casting numbers, So that I can try contacting S&S and see if I can still scrounge a pair. I know how to calculate the bore size needed, it's just that the stock jug bore size is 3.188". In order to get that to 3.5", It would need to be overbored by .312". The most any Ironhead 1000cc can be bored is .070" over without running into overheating problems. The 72-73's are the bastard years that can only be bored over to .040" at the absolute most. Unfortunately someone replaced the jugs and heads on my 75 with ones from a 72. I was thinking of finding 74-85 heads and jugs to put back on the bike.. but if I can score some of these S&S ones, thats half my battle and I wont need to do the storker, which I'd rather not do. Also what pistons are you running? I'm assuming they are ones made for a Shovel?

Thanks again
Mas

Mas, the 2003 JP catalog shows the cylinders you may need. For stock 1200 shovels they list for $137.99. The S&S ones run $480. Try their website.
