Unhappy 1200 Sportster running bad...still

1999 1200 stock engine other that SE air cleaner, coil, wires, carb kit and drag pipes. I put all this stuff on it when it was basically new and now has 17,000 miles on it.

It's been "missing" intermittently for about a year now and I'm getting very frustrated to say the least. Here's the symptoms but it doesn't do these all the time. Taking off from a stop it will miss or cut out for a split second then take off. Going through an intersection and roll back on the throttle, it will miss and cut out briefly. Cruising down the road, hit the throttle hard and fast it will miss like crazy as if it isn't taking the gas. When I slowly ease off the gas it will pick back up and take off.

Here's what I've done. Initially thought I had a bad gas issue because I kept seeing dirt in the carb. Cleaned carb several times including rinsing and flushing tank. During tank flushing, I discovered liner coming loose inside tank and tank rusting. So I took the tank off and shook it with drywall screws in it for a long time to remove liner. Then put muratic acid in it to eat the rust. After all this I thought the intake gaskets were leaking again (replaced them about a year earlier) so I replaced them. Ran fine for a few days then started missing badly, guages going crazy, broken battery cable this time. Fixed that and it still does the same old missing thing. Accelerator pump seems to work fine too.

Any ideas?

Do you have chrome spark plug covers? This caused my bike to miss constantly until I removed them. Just throwing it out there.....

Yes I do. I suspected these a while ago. Removed them and didn't see any signs of arcing. Put them back on after replacing the intake gaskets again because I thought it was fixed.

I'll try taking them off again. Thanks. Keep the ideas coming...before I lose my sanity.
