Carb "Jet Kit" question for 95 883 sporster! help please..

I'm helping a friend install a carb jet kit for a 95 883cc sporty. dang those things are lean!!! Question is: Is there a "Plug" that has to be drilled out, to gain access to the fuel mixture...My friend has a 98 low rider & it did not have the ability to set the fuel mixture ( it had the plug & we drilled it out, just to find out you could'nt adjust the fuel mixture screw.)

So our question is, can drilling the plug off the idle mixture and setting the idle be done on this 95 883cc sporty?? thanks in advance!!

yeah, drill the plug (careful, barely drill the hole nd no deeper) . man, dont waste the money on a jet kit, just install one size larger pilot, raise (or shim) needle, and open the mix screw about half a turn . you may have to fine tune this, and shouldnt need larger main, but if ya do, just the next size up. $10 and correct beats heck outa $100 and never correct!

Here’s the location of the capped off needle.

Drill a 5/64”-1/16” hole in the center of this aluminum plug. Afterwards, insert a small sheet metal screw. Get it in there nice and tight. I used needle nosed pliers to pry the cap out, using the bottom of the carb bowel as the prying spot. It didn’t take much, but the screw has to be in there good, it it’ll just pull out.

After the cap is out, you can adjust it as needed. Usually, 2-2.5 turns out from full IN is a good starting place. Here’s the example of the EZ-turn needle, vs the stock one.

Once together, place back on bike, reattach everything and start the bike. Don't forget to readjust your throttle cables, for pull and return. I also like to use a little silicone grease, (sparingly) on the carb grommet, where the carb slides back into the intake. The silicone helps lube the carb as it slides in, and prevents it from sticking to the carb later. Silicone is also good for rubber.

It has to be warm to set you’re a/f mixture and idle, and that usually takes about a 2-3 mile ride or so. If you’re modding the carb, you’re a/f adjustment of 2-2.5 turns and your previously set idle adjustments are enough to get you down the road, but once warm, tweak it a bit more for best results. Hope this helps some of you guys out.

$32 kit? man, thats sad. even at a serious discount, they suk. to answer the question, out=rich. but if its extremely rich, the mix screw aint helpin, you need to lower jetting. #45 keihin pilot is always a great starting point, as well as a 185 main. remember, lots of jets that come in kits are not sized to the same numbers. i.e. a kit main labled 185 may be equal to a 205 keihen!!!!

The $32.00 kit was the "Low" priced one..others sell for up to $99.00 lol..The bike is stock & the sucker was so lean, she would always be adjusting the choke while she drove it..man it took several miles before the choke could be turned off..thanks to everyone who took the time and posted a response..I got the bike to idle now and will fine tune it..I like the adjustable screw idea..will have to get one of those I guess...hope I dont have to come back with a new problem..lol thanks again !!

remember, it is normal to use the choke for the first several miles. if you steup the carb to run well without choke, or with minum choke useage, it will be too rich.

follow owners manual on how to operate choke, then make slight adjustment of routine pending conditions.

good luck! her enjoying the bike is foremost.
