Question Engine wants to kick back on, after killin' it, then shuts off

Posted in sportster general before found this technical discussion, sorry folks I'm new be nice.......
Hi, I have a 2006 883L I bought a few weeks ago w/only 977 miles. It seems to me that even after being warmed up it idles fast. I was guessing that I could get 150 miles on 3.3 gal? bike cut out on me at 126, drifted into gas station still had gas in tank. Got home and when killed engine it kicked back on then off. Also "popping sound" when got on throttle good. Sound came from engine area not pipes. Noticed my oil cap was popped up but don't know if my leg just hit it. Oil's fine just changed when bought. Bike sat at dealer since last Aug thougt maybe old gas. Next time got gas I put in middle grade, bike seemed o.k. till yesterday rode 20+ miles and when killed engine, same thing. Acted like it wanted to keep running for instant then shut off and popping noise. WTF? I really like the bike but something isn't right. Carbs? Anyone have similiar issues? Starting to wonder if I made a mistake. I plan on keeping this one and working w/it. HELP

Hey Momma

When the engine keeps running after you shut off the ignition switch that's called "dieseling" because like a diesel engine combustion occurs even though there is no spark. There could be two causes.

One is too high of an idle (most common and easily fixed).

The other is that your engine is running too hot.

Or both of the above.

Have your dealer check it out.

Also you should be running premium gas not middle grade.

Good Luck
